cryoablation prior to resection - new article

Post by Olga »

A team from LA advocates the use of the cryo prior to the resection of the primary tumor - they found that cryosurgery followed by wide excision of soft tissue sarcomas is superior to the resection alone, this is the link to the abstract on the PubMed.gov (PMID: 17415009):

Cryoablation and Resection Influences Patient Survival for Soft Tissue Sarcomas: Impact on Survivorship and Local Recurrence.

the authors work at
the Department of Orthopaedics, Los Angeles County-University of Southern California Medical Center, Los Angeles, CA;
the Department of Orthopaedics, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, USC University Hospital, Los Angeles, CA;

Since they have this specific experience with the cryoablation of the primary soft tissue tumors they might be a good place to get a second opinion if there is unresectable primary tumor - they should be able to answer if the prior cryo is able to shrink the primary tumor and allow its resection without the damage to the surrounding nerves/bones.
