Mechanism and Strategy for Treatment of Bone Metastasis

Post by Olga »

Good article from Japan about the current view on the formation and therapeutic intervention for bone metastases
Mechanism and Strategy for Treatment of Cancer Metastasis to Bone
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21677475
They say:
Bisphosphonates(BP)are specific inhibitors of osteoclasts, and have been shown to significantly reduce skeletal-related events(SRE)associated with bone metastasis. Denosumab is a neutralizing monoclonal antibody to RANKL and has recently been found to inhibit SRE more effectively than BP.
If you are experiencing multiple bone metastases events, consult your oncologist if the therapeutic intervention using one of these drugs can be done to block the growth of the existent ones and to avoid the development of the new bone metastases.
Local treatments - ablations, surgeries, radiation therapies - do not work to prevent the new bone mets. We do not have any experience here on the board in regards how these drugs work in an ASPS bone mets setting.
